Is A Carriage House Garage Door Right For Your Home?
Once popular in the 1950s and ‘60s, carriage house garage doors have recently made a comeback. Urban, suburban & country homeowners looking for a way to convey luxury, warmth and style have opted, in increasing numbers, to bring carriage house doors back into vogue. A door takes a large portion of the face of your home & a carriage house door will make it unique.
Many people are wanting to depart from the usual traditional raised panel doors seen on most homes. Not that there is anything wrong with those but every home & homeowner is unique. Everyone wants to make their home their own in their own way. A new door, what ever that may be will do that!
I Don’t Want To Buy The Wrong Door. Will This Look Right On My Home?
It may be easier to ask if this style of door wont look right on my home. A carriage house will look great on most homes but, for example, ‘modern’ homes with a lot of square lines are usually not a good fit. This is a matter of taste.
Take a picture of your home & put the ‘virtual’ door on it. Here are links to Clopay Door Imagination System & Amarr’s Door Designer. Great tools! You can download brochures & brows the different styles & options.

What Are My Options?
There are different construction materials & styles. Your needs & budget are factors to consider. I will list these from the least expensive at the top.
- Clopay’s Grand Harbor is the least expensive. These come with either with or without insulation. Grand Harbor has plastic overlays on the outside. The overlays come in white only so some people like to paint them. The insulated door has no layer of steel on the inside of the garage.
- Amarr’s Classica. This door is close in price to the Grand Harbor depending on options. The Classica has stamped steel instead of overlays & is insulation optional. If you want an insulated door you can have the option of a layer of steel on the inside of the garage. A good thing about this door is you can order this in two tone pain. This is a great door for your home’s shop or pole barn & you want an old style barn door look.
- Similar in looks to the Grand Harbor above is Coachman. Coachman uses composite wood overlays instead of plastic and comes with better insulation options (R6.4 to R-18.4). It has a layer of steel on the inside of the garage. This is a very high quality garage door!
- Wood is more expensive & requires more maintenance. If you want a door that looks like a piece of furniture in your home like the Reserve Semi Custom Series this may be for you. This may not be the best door if it gets a lot of direct afternoon sunlight & has water from the roof flowing on it when it rains.
- Canyon Ridge is the most expensive. If you want low maintenance the composite wood is almost indistinguishable from real wood. It has the highest R-value of R-20.4. A less expensive option to the Limited Edition Series is the Ultra-Grain Series. The Ultra-Grain series has composite overlays over a steel skin. Ultra-Grain paint has the look of a wood grain pattern & texture.
